What Matters Most:
The Environment

We believe our principles should be as clear as our water.
How we best manage our precious water resources and how we limit our impact on the environment is our top priority. Our philosophy is simple: to protect our environment and protect the fruit that it bears. And we’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our land is as natural as it can be, so that our water is as pure as nature intended.
The environment does not stop at the edges of our catchment area and neither does our care for it. In addition to the high degree of effort that goes into looking after our land, we have also been improving the way we work to be as efficient and environmentally-responsible as possible.
Here are just some of the steps we have taken to ensure that our production methods are as green as possible:
- PET lightweighting – we have reduced our annual PET (polyethylene terephthalate) usage in our bottling process by 453,000kg in 2008.
- Recycled PET – in 2008, at least 13.2m Highland Spring bottles were produced using 25% recycled PET. This is expected to rise to 50m bottles in 2009 as we increase our use of recycled materials across our business.
As part of this focus, we were the first bottled water producer to join EMAS – the voluntary Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. This scheme ensures that we follow a code of practice dedicated to minimising our environmental impact and helps us plan for a greener future. We not only meet the standard, but go far beyond what is required to maximise our protection of the environment. And are still the only bottled water brand to do so.
